NIPSA is encouraging all members to join the above protests which have been organised by the Trade Union Movement in opposition to the devastating cuts in public spending that the Westminster Government is planning to implement over the lifetime of the current parliament.

The scale of these cuts is unprecedented and they threaten the jobs and livelihoods of all public servants and their families. The cuts will also threaten the jobs of those employed in the Voluntary and Community Sectors and will have a devastating impact on local private sector employment.

The events are part of a Europe wide day of action against deficit reduction measures being implemented by Governments across Europe.  The initiative is organised by the European Trade Union Congress.

It is critical that NIPSA members and their families make an extra effort to attend these demonstrations given the very real threat the cuts pose to employment and the well being of everyone in Northern Ireland.

Branches are encouraged to convene meetings of members and/or branch committees to discuss how they can maximise support for this protest.

On Saturday 23 October there will be a major march and rally in Belfast in opposition to the cuts.  Further details of this event will be issued in due course.

Finally as part of the ICTU campaign against the cuts all trade union members and their families are being asked to send the attached letter, or their own version of the letter, to their MLAs, local Councillors and Members of Parliament.

I would encourage all members to send a letter based on the attached to their political representatives.

    Yours sincerely

    BRIAN CAMPFIELD

    General Secretary

    Dear Sir/Madam

    RE: WESTMINSTER GOVERNMENT PROPOSED CUTS

I am writing to seek your support in opposition to the proposed cuts by the Westminster Government which will, if implemented, have catastrophic consequences for jobs, both public and private sectors, and the provision of services in Northern Ireland:-

    • Loss of between 35,000 and 50,000 jobs across Northern Ireland.
    • Condemn a lost generation to long-term unemployment and the ‘brain drain’.
    • Devastate the private sector in Northern Ireland through the loss of procurement from public to private sector worth in the region of £3bn per annum.
    • 40% cut in investment between 2010-2014 sounding the death knell for the construction sector and its supply chain.
    • Reductions in welfare benefits for the most marginalised in our society.
    • Reduction in health, education and other services for all.

An alternative strategy to the current economic difficulties will be presented to you and your Party by the Northern Ireland Committee, Irish Congress of Trade Unions, over the coming weeks.

    Yours faithfully
