    Dear Colleague

The purpose of this bulletin is to advise members about a number of events which have been organised in Northern Ireland in opposition to the government’s austerity programme which involves a fundamental attack on public services and the Welfare State.

    International Women’s Day Events

On Tuesday, 8 March a march will take place from the Arts College, Belfast to Belfast City Hall.  The march will commence at 10.30 am and is part of a series of events to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.  A separate circular will issue with detail of the range of events organised as part of this initiative but members should be aware that opposition to public spending cuts is a central theme of this initiative.  While I appreciate that few members will be able to participate in the march in Belfast because it falls on a working day during mid morning any members who are able to should support the march.

Student Demonstration Against Increase in Tuition Fees/Abolition of Education Maintenance Allowance – 6 April 2011

The National Union of Students/Union of Students in Ireland along with the trade unions have organised a demonstration on Wednesday, 6 April 2011 to protest against the UK Government’s reduction policies in particular the increase in tuition fees and the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) which provides financial support to students from less well off backgrounds to continue their education.  The NI Executive is planning to abolish the EMA with effect from April 2012.  Members will also be aware that a significant hike in tuition fees is being proposed for 3rd level students in Northern Ireland.

Annual May Day March and Rally – Saturday, 30 April 2011

The annual May Day March and Rally will take place on Saturday, 30 April 2011.  This event provides a further opportunity to protest against the UK Government’s austerity programme and its implementation in Northern Ireland by the NI Executive.  It is essential that as many NIPSA members and their families support this event to show our opposition to cuts in public services, job losses, pay freezes and increased employee pension contributions.

Further details of the above events will be issued to branches in due course.

    Yours sincerely

    BRIAN CAMPFIELD

    General Secretary
