The NIPSA General Council wishes to thank all those members who were able to attend the trade union anti cuts demonstrations that took place in Belfast and Derry on Wednesday, 29 September as part of the European wide day of protests against austerity measures which will severely damage public services, jobs and the local economy as well as the more vulnerable in our society. We know that many members would have wished to participate in the demonstrations but were unable to do so for reasons related to their work commitments and geography.
The demonstrations were successful in mobilising large numbers of trade union members. The trade union movement needs to build for a major rally in Belfast on Saturday, 23 October. Branches will be asked to build for this important event over the coming weeks and all members will receive a copy of a special edition of NIPSA Reports highlighting the severity of the planned cuts in public expenditure and the need to support the unions activities and the ICTU organised rally on 23 October.
In the meantime I would be grateful if you could convey to members the union’s appreciation of their support on the 29 September and encourage them to become active in the unions campaign to defend public services, jobs and pensions.
Photographs of the NIPSA participation in the protests in Belfast and Derry events will appear shortly on the NIPSA website.
Yours sincerely
BRIAN CAMPFIELD
General Secretary
