Dear Colleague
Please see attached bulletin which has been issued to NIPSA branches in the Education and Health Sectors in respect of NIPSA support for the UNISON strike which has been called for 5 October 2011.
While NIPSA members have been encouraged to support UNISON members on strike on that date it is important that NIPSA members across the public sector and in the community and voluntary sector also demonstrate support for the strike.
Attendance at picket lines especially in the morning and at lunch times is encouraged and NIPSA flags and posters should be displayed at UNISON picket lines, etc during periods when NIPSA members are expressing their solidarity outside workplaces where UNISON has a presence.
Supplies of NIPSA posters and flags can be obtained by contacting Lesley-Anne Scott at NIPSA HQ.
NIPSA will be balloting its members on industrial action, commencing on 10 October, and is strongly recommending a "yes" vote for strike action to enable NIPSA to participate in the UK wide strike planned for 30 November 2011.
Yours sincerely

Education and Library Board Branch Secretaries (3NO)
Seconded Officers (3KL)
HQ Officials (Int 1)
Dear Colleague
As you will be aware our colleagues in UNISON have decided to call a one day strike of its members in the 5 Health and Social Care Trusts and the 5 Education and Library Boards on 5 October 2011. This follows a statutory industrial action ballot of its members in those areas.
The UNISON trade dispute relates to a number of issues affecting the workforce including vacancies, the casualisation of the workforce, pay and other related matters.
NIPSA as you will be aware will be balloting its members across the public sector in Northern Ireland, commencing on 10 October 2011 with a view to taking strike action on 30 November 2011 as part of a UK wide campaign on pensions, pay and job cuts, provided we secure a "yes" vote in the ballot. It is expected that UNISON members in Northern Ireland will also be taking strike action on 30 November 2011.
The purpose of this letter is to advise branches that the union fully supports the UNISON members who will be on strike on 5 October. In particular the NIPSA General Council would advise the following:-
- While NIPSA members will be working as normal NIPSA members should not cover the work of any UNISON member who is taking strike action on 5 October.
- Attend picket lines at workplaces to show our support and to bring along NIPSA flags, banners and placards, etc to publicly highlight our support for the striking workers.
- Attend any rallies that might be organised in different locations.
It is particularly important that NIPSA demonstrates its support for UNISON members on strike. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has also expressed its full support for the action and has asked all affiliated trade unions, especially those representing employees in the health and education sectors, to support the action.
Yours sincerely
BRIAN CAMPFIELD
General Secretary
