Campaign For Reinstatement of Sacked Traffic Attendants
Campaign For Reinstatement of Sacked Traffic Attendants
27/07/2009
NIPSA Branch Secretary circular GC 40/09 issued on 17 July 2009 reports on NIPSA discussions with the employer NSL Services Group seeking the reinstatement of the Traffic Attendants
The union’s objective is to secure agreement that all the dismissed Traffic
Attendants will be reinstated. Following yesterday’s talks that objective has not been
obtained and there are other elements of NSL’s proposals for an agreement not
acceptable to the union. However both parties have agreed to continue the
negotiations and these will resume again next Friday morning, 31 July 2009.
Industrial Action
The developments have been reported to a meeting of the Traffic Attendants’ NIPSA
Branch last night. At an earlier meeting the Branch had decided unanimously to
ballot all members to take industrial action in support of the dismissed Traffic
Attendants but had agreed to suspend that ballot to allow the negotiations with the
company to proceed in good faith.
The Branch fully endorsed the negotiations continuing with NSL next Friday.
However the Branch also decided to seek the necessary approvals to be in a
position to proceed with the industrial action ballot if the negotiations did not result in
an acceptable agreement to resolve the dispute.
Support the Protest
In the meantime the Traffic Attendants will be maintaining their campaign against the
dismissals including their ongoing public protest outside NSL’s offices in Callender
Street, Belfast. The 26 Traffic Attendants campaigning for the right to return to their
public service jobs have sustained this daily protest. This campaign has continued
for 14 weeks. It is important that the employer and the responsible Government
Department see clearly that the Traffic Attendants do have the support of all other
NIPSA Branches.
I hope therefore that in the coming week Branches will continue to make
special efforts to attend the protest being held every morning in Callender St,
Belfast and bring messages of solidarity and support to the Traffic Attendants.
