This bulletin is calling on NIPSA members to support the trade unions’ lunch time demonstrations on Friday 6th November 2009 in support of our public services and for fairness to workers and families.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has organised the public rallies against the background of cuts to services already being implemented – in Health, Education, Housing and in other areas such as the Civil Service. The Government has poured £billions of taxpayers’ money into bailing banks out of the consequences of their reckless actions. Bank bosses have walked off with £millions and are now planning to award themselves more bonuses. Everyone else is being asked to pay with more expenditure cuts to vital public services.

Furthermore cutting public services affects more than public service staff. Working people and their families depend on public services. Attacking public services will mean the loss of more jobs from the public and private sectors.

Delivering Message to Ministers

Support for these important public rallies will help to ensure that Executive Ministers and Assembly Members are left in no doubt that the community in Northern Ireland will resist any attempts to cut public services. The trade unions believe that Executive Ministers should allocate available public expenditure on a basis that will protect vital public services and meet the needs of the community.

The ICTU leaflet attached provides information on the public rallies as well as information on the trade unions’ 10 point plan for a better and fairer deal for the people of Northern Ireland. Additional copies of the leaflet are enclosed for display on notice boards and circulation to members.

All the lunch time rallies will commence at 1.00 p.m. on Friday 6th November 2009 and will be for approximately 30 minutes. Members should note:-

Belfast City Hall rally 1.00 p.m.

Public service staff and supporters will be marching to this rally from three locations –

            Belfast City Hospital

            Royal Hospital

            Mater Hospital.

We strongly encourage members working in these areas to join the marches. Members should assemble from 12 noon in time to march to Belfast City Hall for 1.00 p.m.

Ballymena lunch time rally

Please note the venue for the rally has been changed from the Diamond to be held instead at the Bandstand, Broadway, Ballymena.

We request all Branches to encourage members to support the short lunch time rallies. These are an important step in building a united trade union campaign to ensure a better and fairer deal for working people and their families in Northern Ireland.

Yours sincerely

JOHN COREY

General Secretary
