On 20 October 2010 the 4 year Comprehensive Spending Plans will be published. These plans will detail the cuts to public spending over the life of this Parliament. The NI Executive intends to publish its budget shortly after 20 October 2010. This budget will be based on the block grant allocation to Northern Ireland but we already are aware that there will be cuts of between 25% to 40% to the budgets of Government Departments.
While it is not possible to be definitive it is estimated that over 30,000 public sector jobs in Northern Ireland will be lost over the 4 year period.
European TUC Day of Action – 29 September 2010
As part of the ETUC Day of Action on 29 September 2010 the Trade Union Movement will be holding a rally at Belfast City Hall at 12.30 pm to protest against the cuts to public spending. Further details will be provided on this event and any other events that local Councils of Trade Unions might decide to organise in their local areas. It is essential that branches mobilise their members for this event.
UK Wide Protest – 23 October 2010
In support of the British TUC Day of Protest which has been set for Saturday, 23 October 2010 the trade unions in Northern Ireland are organising a major march and rally in Belfast City Centre on the same day. The Trade Union Movement will be working to ensure that this demonstration secures the broadest possible support across society in Northern Ireland.
NIPSA is fully supportive of both the above demonstrations and we will be working hard to ensure that these protests are a success.
The purpose of this bulletin is to alert branches to these events. Further details will be issued in due course.
Yours sincerely
BRIAN CAMPFIELD
General Secretary
