NIPSA & ICTU TRAINING COURSES
NIPSA REPRESENTATIVES COURSE – STAGE 1
This 10 week course is an essential programme for NIPSA Representatives. It aims to develop the skills necessary to build the confidence to help our Reps in their role in their branches.
The course will assist Branch Representatives in their day to day involvement in representing members in disciplinary, grievance & terms and conditions issues.
The course is accredited by the Open College Network.
On successful completion participants will be expected to become involved in actual cases, initially in the company of a HQ Official, Seconded Officer or experienced Branch Officer.
NIPSA ADVANCED REPRESENTATIVES COURSE
This 10 week course is an essential follow on course for NIPSA Reps who have already completed stage 1. It builds upon the previous course, reinforcing experience gained, emphasising the importance of workplace organising and introducing the wider trade union context.
HEALTH & SAFETY COURSE – STAGE 1
This 10 day (one day a week for 10 weeks) course is suitable for new Health and Safety Representatives and elected Representatives who have not yet been trained. It will cover the basic knowledge and skills necessary including an understanding of health and safety legislation and how this can be interpreted for the workplace.
HEALTH & SAFETY COURSE – STAGE 2
This course is essential progression for Health and Safety Representatives who have completed stage 1. It will assist Representatives to gain a deeper knowledge of the legislation and will include building a safe and healthy workplace.
DIPLOMA IN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY
This course offers representatives the opportunity to study health and safety in more depth. The course is specifically designed with trade union roles in mind and is offered 1 day a week for 36 weeks and is accredited by the Northern Ireland Open College Network (NIOCN).
UNION LEARNING REPRESENTATIVES COURSE
This 10 day course will comprise stage 1 and 2 for Union Learning Reps and will cover the information and skills that ULRs will need to support and develop learning in their workplace.
It covers identifying learning needs and contacts and information networks.
OTHER ICTU COURSES AVAILABLE:
COMMUNICATION AND NEGOTIATION SKILLS FOR UNION REPS
A five day course, suitable for all Representatives, focusing on developing effective communication and negotiation skills.
DEALING WITH BULLYING AND HARASSMENT
A three day course for trade union representatives focusing on handling the issues of bullying and harassment and violence at work.
DIPLOMA IN EMPLOYMENT LAW
This course offers an opportunity to study employment law in more depth. The course is specifically designed with Trade Union roles in mind and is offered 1 day a week for 36 weeks and is accredited by the Northern Ireland Open College Network (NIOCN). It is most suitable for full time/seconded Officials and those on facility time.
DISABILITY CHAMPIONS
This course is suitable for Union Representatives interested in becoming Disability Champions for their workplace. Disability Champions work with their employers to build an enabling workplace where disabled workers and job seekers can realise their full potential.
EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS IN THE WORKPLACE
This 10 day course is suitable for all Representatives especially those who have completed Stage 1 Representatives course. It will provide an introduction to employment law in the workplace including handling disciplinary and grievances and equality law.
THE EQUALITY REP
A three day course introducing the role of the Equality Rep in the workplace.
PUBLIC SPEAKING FOR UNION REPRESENTATIVES
A new course to help develop the public speaking skills necessary to encourage reps to speak with confidence at branch meetings, conferences etc.
TRADE UNIONS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
This 3 day course looks at how trade unions can support the green economy and encourage workplaces and unions to be greener and more environmentally aware.
WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP
A ten day programme for women activists covering topics such as women in public life, leadership styles, using the media. Accredited with the OCN.
WORK RELATED STRESS – A TRADE UNION APPROACH
This 3 day course is suitable for all workplace Representatives and full time Officials and will focus on Trade Union strategies to combat stress in the workplace.
