NIPSA TRAINING COURSES
NIPSA REPRESENTATIVES COURSE
This 10 week course is an essential introduction to the role of the Representative. It is suitable for newly elected Representatives or those who have been elected but not yet trained. It is an essential introduction to the role of the Trade Union Representative.
This NIPSA modular 10 week training for our NIPSA Representatives was piloted in 2008 and has proved very successful. It is accredited by the Open College Network.
On successful completion of the course participants will be expected to become involved in actual cases, initially in the company of a HQ Official, Seconded Officer or experienced Branch Officer.
HEALTH & SAFETY COURSE – STAGE 1
This 10 day (one day a week for 10 weeks) course is suitable for new Health and Safety Representatives and elected Representatives who have not yet been trained. It will cover the basic knowledge and skills necessary including an understanding of health and safety legislation and how this can be interpreted for the workplace.
HEALTH & SAFETY COURSE – STAGE 2
This course is essential progression for Health and Safety Representatives who have completed stage 1. It will assist Representatives to gain a deeper knowledge of the legislation and will include building a safe and healthy workplace.
CERTIFICATE IN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY
This course offers Representatives the opportunity to study health and safety in more depth. The course is specifically designed with Trade Union roles in mind and is offered 1 day a week for 36 weeks and is accredited by the Northern Ireland Open College Network (NIOCN).
UNION LEARNING REPS – STAGE 1
This course will provide the knowledge and skills that newly elected Union Learning Representatives will need to be effective in their role. It will include input from educational organisations.
ADVANCED COURSE FOR UNION LEARNING REPS – STAGE 2
This course will provide a refresher for existing Union Learning Representatives and will also provide more information on supporting essential skills in the workplace and working with employers.
OTHER COURSES AVAILABLE:
WORK RELATED STRESS
This 3 day course is suitable for all workplace Representatives and full time Officials and will focus on Trade Union strategies to combat stress in the workplace.
INTRODUCTION TO EQUALITY
This course is suitable for all Representatives and gives an overview of the equality legislation specific to Northern Ireland drawing on Trade Union experience in the workplace.
DISABILITY CHAMPIONS
This course is suitable for Union Representatives interested in becoming Disability Champions for their workplace. Disability Champions work with their employers to build an enabling workplace where disabled workers and job seekers can realise their full potential.
PLANNING AN INDUSTRIAL TRIBUNAL
This is a 2 day course suitable for Full time/Seconded Officials and Branch Officers who are actively involved in preparing and planning for Industrial Tribunals.
EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS IN THE WORKPLACE
This new 10 day course is suitable for all Representatives especially those who have completed Stage 1 Representatives course. It will provide an introduction to employment law in the workplace including handling disciplinary and grievances and equality law.
NEGOTIATION SKILLS FOR TRADE UNIONISTS
A two day course for Trade Union reps looking at the skills and tactics needed for successful negotiation.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR UNION REPS
A two day course, suitable for all Representatives, on developing effective communication skills..
