The exhibition will bring together a wide variety of your creative thoughts exploring ‘work’ , and showcase the value of trade union learning.
The theme is WORLD OF WORK which we have broken down loosely into categories:
- your experiences or recollection of the early years – preparing for work
- your working life - your relationships and work
- your retirement – lessons learned – experiences shared
CONTENT UNLIMITED – we want to include all forms of creative expression, creative thinking, creative doing.
- Creative writing- poetry- short stories – historical accounts – lists – lyrics – diaries- notes ...
- Images – painting – drawing – photography – printmaking– mark making – sculpture …
- Time based – song - video – readings – recitals – commentary…
At this stage we are looking to compile raw materials (rough outlines, concepts, an insight into your thinking) which we could then work with to develop for the exhibition.
Please submit examples of your creativity to Gillian Belch at the Irish Congress of Trade Unions by the 10th December 2010.

Additional Information
We are trying to create a visual timeline that portrays the idea of WORK. WORK is a feature of everyone’s life: whether you are employed, retired, working from home, raising a family or unemployed, you are still ‘at work’ being human.
We want to capture all of this in the exhibition so we are inviting submissions to contribute to a collaborative artwork that will be created from the materials that you bring to it.
Please do not frame, bind or otherwise ‘finish’ the artworks. At this stage, we are looking for ‘raw materials’ and ideas.
The raw materials could be:
- Creative Writing: translating your thoughts, ideas or feelings into words
- Drawing: translating your thoughts, ideas and feelings into lines or marks on a surface
- Photography: using a camera to translate your thought, feelings or ideas
- Painting: using paint to convey your ideas, responses, thoughts on the theme.
- Mixed Media: using a variety of materials to transform your ideas or thoughts into something physical
- Sculpture: making your ideas, thoughts, etc into a three dimensional form
- Time Based Art: moving image, recorded interviews, songs, etc
Example:
The Price of Art in Luton
On the bridge approaching the railway,
the man was begging.
I said draw me a dog
and I'll give you a quid.
So I gave him some paper
and he did.
And I said, there you go, mate,
you can make money out of art!
Will you sign it?
As I handed him the one pound thirty-odd
I had in my pocket,
he informed me that the signed ones were a fiver.
