This protest is one of a series NIPSA has organised in various parts of the Greater Belfast Area to oppose the closing up of 15 out of the 32 libraries across Belfast.

Alison Millar, NIPSA Deputy General Secretary, said

“It is unacceptable that Libraries NI appear, in a time of recession, to want to close library provision when it is most needed.

In the West of the City Libraries NI are proposing to close Andersonstown, Colin Glen and Suffolk libraries and replace them with just one.

NIPSA in responding to the needs of the community understands the community wish to retain local community libraries close to the areas they serve.

These libraries are of particular benefit to the young, the elderly and those who are socially disadvantaged.

On World Book Day NIPSA would challenge Libraries NI to listen and ensure they do not rip the heart out of much needy areas where the libraries provide a vital service”
