NIPSA, Northern Ireland’s largest trade union, is calling on all Northern Ireland’s Westminster MPs to vote against Chancellor George Osborne’s emergency budget on Tuesday when the vote is taken in the House of Commons.
Alison Millar, NIPSA Deputy General Secretary, stated:
“It is critical that Northern Ireland’s representatives at Westminster vote as a bloc against the budget proposals on Tuesday in order to send a clear and unambiguous message to the Coalition Government that the budget measures will do irreparable damage to the NI economy. NIPSA believes it will increase unemployment and will damage public services and the communities which most rely on these services.
Failure to do so will mean that our MPs will be responsible for colluding with a government which is prepared to wreak havoc on the people of Northern Ireland and when the damage starts to manifest itself the stand taken by our MPs will not be forgotten by the voters.
Here is the opportunity for our MPs to take a united stand against the range of austerity measures which will do long term damage to our economy and our public services and which will have a disproportionate negative impact on the less well off in our society.”
