NIPSA reacted with anger to the decision of Libraries NI to close 10 Libraries in the Greater Belfast Area.

NIPSA, Deputy General Secretary Alison Millar, stated ……

“It is clear Libraries NI did not want to seriously listen to the views of library users across Belfast who demanded that their local library remained open.

While welcoming the decision to keep open 4 libraries namely Ballyhackamore, Cloughfern, Tullycarnet and Woodstock it is disappointing that the decision was taken to close the remaining 10.”

NIPSA do not accept that the people of Belfast supported the Libraries NI vision. What the users NIPSA engaged with supported was local libraries – not larger libraries further away from the communities they serve.

The young, the elderly and the unemployed are those who will be most affected by this poor and ill-thought out decision.
