NIPSA, Northern Ireland’s largest public sector trade union has congratulated public sector employees who took strike action and supported the trade union rallies across Northern Ireland.
Brian Campfield, the union’s General Secretary, stated:-
“The workers who took to the picket lines and the streets today represent the strong desire for a more decent and more equal society in which the wealthy and the big corporations pay their way where high quality public services are available by right to all citizens.
The principles expressed by these workers are in stark contrast to those of the millionaire coalition government which is destroying public services and forcing the ordinary citizen to pay for a crisis created by the friends of the government in the financial and social elites.
The strike and the message from those that provide essential and important services to the young, the old and everyone in our community should be a rallying cry for the people of Northern Ireland.
The NI Assembly and the Executive must take this message to Westminster. They must adopt a robust defence of the people of Northern Ireland. Otherwise public sector workers and the communities that depend on public services and the welfare state will ask the question: What is the point of an Assembly if they are not leading the fight against the UK Government’s austerity measures?”
