Responding today to the comments by Finance Minister that the Bain report on public sector job location should be shelved, the public service union NIPSA has called on Executive Ministers to ensure the report recommendations are implemented.

NIPSA General Secretary John Corey said:-

The Bain report addressed the important principle of a fair distribution of public service jobs across Northern Ireland

Implementation of the report recommendations will improve equal opportunities and will contribute significantly to ensuring a better distribution of jobs under the Review of Public Administration.

It is totally unacceptable for the Minister to be reaching conclusions before there has been any public consultation on the report. Furthermore the report also recommended that there must be early and sustained engagement with the trade unions and that has not happened either.

We urge Executive Ministers to ensure that this important report is properly and fully addressed. Locating public service jobs in Northern Ireland on a fair and equitable basis could save taxpayers' money in the future.
