NIPSA Assistant  General Secretary Bumper Graham said

“Since August, NIPSA has sought to avert these redundancies by putting pragmatic, realistic and cheaper solutions to Maherafelt Council. In the sham that purports to be negotiations, the Council is not only failing to listen, it is also refusing to provide all of the facts, figures and costs of what is not a closure of Greenvale but a temporary problem whilst refurbishment work is carried out.”

The Council is proposing to close Greenvale and make the staff of the Leisure Centre redundant whilst it carries out refurbishment at the Centre.

Bumper Graham said

“It makes no sense to make people redundant, pay redundancy costs, pay for an expensive recruitment exercise on re-opening when we have put proposals that would overcome these problems. Our solutions not only ensure that those who wish to have their jobs protected can do so but also our proposals will significantly reduce the costs to the Council”.

NIPSA has written to each member of the Council and is seeking to be able to address the Council at its meeting on 13th October 2009.
