NIPSA Secures Over £1M for Members

15/04/2010

NIPSA, Northern Ireland’s largest Trade Union obtained, in the last year well in excess of £1,000,000 compensation for members in conjunction with the Union’s Solicitors McCartan Turkington Breen. Over £500,000 was in relation to damages obtained for members in personal injury claims. The personal injury claims arose in a variety of situations including road traffic accidents and accidents in public places.

The major part of the compensation was however obtained from accidents that occurred in the workplace including for stress related injuries in the workplace as well as a range of other workplace accidents.

The NIPSA Legal Assistance (Personal Injury) Scheme has been in operation for over 30 years and during that period of time tens of millions of pounds of compensation have been won for members. NIPSA is delighted with the success of the scheme bearing in mind that most of its members would not be entitled to state legal aid or any other forms of funding. Most members of NIPSA are in a situation whereby the potential cost of bringing litigation to recover damages for personal injury would be prohibitive. NIPSA provides a variety of services to its members but has found that the Personal Injury Scheme, in particular, has been of great benefit to its members. In addition, NIPSA provides legal assistance for its members in relation to other employment related issues, as required.

NIPSA spokesperson Bumper Graham said, “It is important to provide such services over and above the representations and negotiations on behalf of members. Our data shows that over 50% of the awards relate directly to injuries in the workplace and this therefore demonstrates the value of NIPSA membership. Working with our Solicitors, McCartan Turkington Breen, also provide members with extensive cover for accidents that occur outside of the workplace.”
