NIPSA the largest public service trade union in Northern Ireland slammed the announcement that public sector workers in Northern Ireland are to be hit with increased pension contributions.
NIPSA General Secretary, Brian Campfield, said:-
“This confirms that the pensions negotiations are just a front for the government who are determined to raid public service pensions to pay for the latest bailing out of the failing banks. These increases are an unjust tax on public servants and have nothing to do with pension funds. It is in fact a £6.4bn hit on public sector workers.”
NIPSA is balloting 43,500 of its members for strike action on the 30 November over pension attacks, pay cuts and massive job loses across the public services. NIPSA is coordinating its ballot with unions in all parts of the public sector. The NIPSA ballot commences on Monday, 10 October 2011.
Assistant General Secretary, Bumper Graham, said:-
“This is not just about unjust pension contribution increases. Other aspects of the pension package have already been attacked with yet more plans to dilute and devalue public service pensions. In essence this government is stealing from public service pensioners and making current public servants pay more plus work a lot longer in order to get an average pension of less than £5,000 per annum, overall a cut in the pension value of 25%.”
