Sacked Traffic Attendants Seek Backing of MEP Election Candidates

02/06/2009

NIPSA, Northern Ireland’s largest public sector trade union, has called on all the European Parliamentary candidates to declare publicly that they support the campaign for 25 sacked Belfast Traffic Attendants to be reinstated in their jobs.

In April the Traffic Attendants were dismissed by the private sector Company NCP Services (now NSL Services Group) for walking off the job in protest at the lack of action to address long standing grievances including health and safety issues.

On the eve of the European Parliamentary elections NIPSA is calling on the candidates from all the political parties to back the Traffic Attendants by demanding that NSL Services Group reinstate the workers to their jobs.

John Corey NIPSA General Secretary said today:-

“We are calling on all candidates in the European Parliamentary elections to come out and declare they support the campaign to have the 25 sacked Traffic Attendants reinstated in their jobs.

These workers providing an important public service did not deserve to be treated in such a brutal manner. This would not have been allowed to happen in most other European Union states. The Traffic Attendants should be reinstated in their jobs immediately.

In their endeavours to secure jobs and investment in Northern Ireland politicians need to recognise that jobs must come with rights for workers.  We are taking this opportunity as the public proceed to vote on Thursday to highlight that the appeals by the sacked Traffic Attendants will begin in Belfast. NIPSA is determined to secure justice for the sacked workers.

We would welcome statements of support from all the candidates in this Thursday’s election and their calls on the company to immediately reinstate the sacked workers.”
