Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
07/04/2010
In the run-up to the General Election politicians from all political parties are vying with each other to see who can attack most the provision of public service pensions. The attacks are also coming from ill informed employer organisations, representatives of big business and Bankers (not least those who have been bailed out by public funds and are themselves de facto public servants).

As a funded scheme (one of very few) the Local Government Pension Scheme has been targeted for particular attention, especially by local politicians in England and Wales. NIPSA in conjunction with a number of other unions has responded to these attacks and I am enclosing copies of a set of campaign leaflets in defence of the Local Government Pension Scheme. The set includes:-
(i) The Truth About The Local Government Pension Scheme;
(ii) Local Government Pension Scheme – Ten Key Facts;
(iii) What The Politicians say About the LGPS;
(iv) Local Government Pension Scheme – Mythbusting guide; and
(v) Local Government Pension Fund – the Economics.
Branches should distribute the leaflets widely and encourage any member who may not be a member of the NILGOSC (LGPS) to consider joining the pension scheme.
A review of the LGPS has been established in Northern Ireland by the Department of the Environment to:-
(i) consider, monitor and evaluate the implementation of the LGPS Regulations introduced on 1 April 2009;
(ii) where necessary, make recommendations on future policy; and
(iii) if required, propose amendments to the Regulations.
A LGPS Review Group has been established by DOE to take this work forward it comprises of four employer representatives, four trade union nominees from NIC-ICTU, two NILGOSC Officers and Officials from the DOE. NIPSA is represented on the Group by Bumper Graham, Assistant General Secretary and NILGOSC Committee member. The Review Group has been initially tasked to review the new ill-health arrangements and to examine the issues around potential cost sharing arrangements. Details of the ongoing work of the DOE LGPS Review Group will be issued in further Bulletins and Circulars.
Members should take the opportunity in the forthcoming general election to point out to candidates the truth about public service pensions and in particular the LGPS.
Yours sincerely
BUMPER GRAHAM
Assistant General Secretary
