Industrial Action Ballot

Print this page
27 September 2011

To keep branches of the up to date position in respect of the decision by NIPSA to ballot its members for industrial action.

The dispute will cover pensions, pay and job cuts in the employment areas in which NIPSA has members. A list of employing bodies which will be covered by the ballot and those that will be excluded from the ballot will shortly be communicated to branches. While all the main public bodies will be covered by the ballot a small number of bodies where NIPSA has members, for example NSL and Aramark, will be excluded because these organisations are private sector bodies where we do not have a dispute. A final determination is to be made in respect of a small number of bodies which are outwith the main public sector pension schemes before any ballot papers issue.

The timetable for the NIPSA ballot will be as follows:-

Commencement of Ballot

-

10 October 2011

Close of Ballot

-

7 November 2011

The NIPSA General Council has agreed, in the event of a “yes” vote from members for strike action to participate in the UK wide strike day on 30 November 2011.

It is essential that all branches prioritise winning the case for a yes vote among members to enable NIPSA to fully participate in the action on 30 November 2011.

UCU already has a mandate for strike action and its members in the universities will be on strike on 30 November 2011.

You will see from the range of trade unions across the different sectors that there is a united trade union response building in opposition to attacks on pensions, pay and job cuts. While many of the unions are balloting their members on pensions a significant number of unions including NIPSA are also including pay and job cuts in the dispute. This will enable NIPSA to also take action if necessary at some point in the future to protect members jobs and to secure a fair pay settlement.

The primary purpose of this bulletin is to advise branches about the timetable for the NIPSA ballot and to inform members about the intentions of the other public sector trade unions in respect of balloting their members.

Further bulletins will be issued as developments arise.

Yours sincerely

BRIAN CAMPFIELD

General Secretary
